FAQs

Chimneys

How often should I clean my fireplace?
Depending how often you use it & what material you burn, every 1-3 years is the norm. Another rule of thumb is every cord of wood.

What kind of wood should I use?
Natural, dry, hard, seasoned wood is the best (typically oak, almond & walnut for the Sacramento region), as it burns cleaner and hotter. Fake packaged logs produce more debris inside of the fireplace — more buildup equals more risk.

How long does the cleaning process take?
Setup, accessibility, amount of buildup & the type of fireplace system present all affect the duration & methods of cleaning. Generally, a full cleaning can range in time from 20 to 90 minutes.

How much does the service cost?
Prices vary depending on type of service & scope of work; we do have general prices for each service but circumstances differ — please call our office for further details.

What causes fireplace smoking issues?
A number of factors can be the culprit. They range from (but are not limited to): closed damper, clogged cap, dirty flue & fireplace, internal damage (obstructions), central heater in use, nearby fan being utilized, low chimney height, too much cold air (flue needs to be pre-heated), faulty design / location....etc.

How do I operate the damper?
There is usually a handle attached to the damper that can be pulled & pushed (forward & backwards OR up & down OR left & right OR even sometimes a combination of each). The damper must be fully open for maximum ventilation of smoke & soot. It’s recommended to be closed when the fireplace is not in use.

What are the "restricted burn days" in my area?

Inserts and Stoves

What's the cost of an insert unit itself?
$1,500 to $5,500 depending on the condition, type, size, extras, new or used, accessories, etc. Costs for necessary components & liner are separate, as well as installation costs.

Does my insert need a liner?
Yes, a fully connected exhaust liner is needed to ensure optimal efficiency & maximum safety. This also results in cheaper cleanings & inspections.

What types of inserts are in the market?
Wood, gas, and pellet.

Dryer Vents

How do I know if my dryer vent needs to be cleaned?
Drying times have increased (extending beyond the 45-60min standard); dryer unit regularly shuts off; the dryer unit is hot to the touch; lint screen clogs faster; burning odors are present during dryer sessions; laundry area has lint build-up (floor, walls, behind and underneath laundry units).

How often should I have my dryer vent cleaned?
Normally, every 1-3 years; however, individual setups & circumstances vary, thus affecting how often a cleaning is needed; recommendations are made on an individual basis

How often should I clean my lint trap?

Yearly is the common recommendation.  Most circumstances require a cleaning every 1-3 years and in some cases even longer depending on a variety of factors.

Do gutter guards/covers really work?
Yes, if you have the appropriate type for your individual setup & circumstance. Many styles and designs exist but not all are effective. Various factors make a difference (roof type and material, roof pitch, gutter type & size, nearby trees & type of debris, accessibility, etc.).

Do you install gutters?
We do not install gutter systems at this time but we do clean gutters and install covers/guards.

Do you repair gutters?
We do not typically do any repairs on gutters themselves. At times, we are equipped to apply minor sealants (limitations apply).
